Mezzalama Trophy

A Glacier Marathon

By: Visit Monterosa

trofeo mezzalama

From Cervinia to Gressoney, crossing the majesty of Monte Rosa, born in 1933, the highest international ski mountaineering race in the Alps, a real glacier marathon that exceeds 4000 m in two segments, an adventure on skis with a pioneering atmosphere that has its roots in the intense exploration activity of Ottorino Mezzalama from Turin, to which it is dedicated.

It began with the first six consecutive editions from 1933 to 1938, then interrupted during the Second World War and resumed in 1971, from which point four editions were held until 1978.

The modern history of the Trophy starts again in 1997 and from then on it will be disputed every odd-numbered year.

Of the historical Mezzalama, the teams of three elements remain, the route instead becomes longer at the top and at the bottom: it starts from the base of the Cervinia slopes at 2020 m and arrives in Gressoney-la-Trinité 1637 m. Since 2001, the regulations have banned cross-country skis, imposing the wide skis used in international ski mountaineering competitions.
